Blessé à l’épaule droite il y a un mois, Sam Lowes a tenté de participer au Grand Prix du Qatar, mais doit déclarer forfait après les deux premières séances d’essais libres.
Le Grand Prix moto du Qatar a son deuxième forfait. Après le renoncement de Niccolo Antonelli (Moto3), tombé lors du test de pré-saison 2020 de Jerez, en février, et opéré de l’épaule, c’est au tour de Sam Lowes (Moto2) de jeter l’éponge.
Le Britannique souffre également de l’épaule, fracturée suite à une chute à Jerez un mois plus tôt. Aucune intervention chirurgicale n’a été pratiquée et il espérait pouvoir être en mesure de rouler à Losail, ce week-end. Il a d’ailleurs essayé vendredi, bouclant 25 tours au cumul des séances FP1 et FP2, avec un meilleur temps en 1’59.561 (20e à 1,140 seconde du leader).
Mais ce samedi matin, l’équipe EG 0,0 Marc VDS a annoncé la mauvaise nouvelle : « Suivant les conseils médicaux, et en accord avec le team, Sam Lowes ne participera pas à la suite du Grand Prix du Qatar, malgré la bonne performance dont il a fait preuve aux essais vendredi. Le pilote va se concentrer sur sa récupération afin d’être prêt à disputer le prochain Grand Prix. »
Le report du Grand Prix de Thaïlande, initialement prévu deux semaines après celui du Qatar, va permettre au champion du monde Supersport 2013 de bénéficier d’un peu plus de temps que prévu pour se remettre. Il fera son retour en piste le week-end du 5 avril à Austin, pour le Grand Prix des Amériques.
