Après trois ans chez Ducati, Luca Marini s’apprête à relever un défi de taille au sein de l’équipe officielle Honda.
Début mars, sur le circuit de Lusail, Luca Marini disputera son tout premier Grand Prix en tant que pilote officiel après trois saisons au guidon d’une Ducati de la structure VR46.
L’Italien a quitté Ducati pour rejoindre le team Repsol Honda à la place de Marc Marquez, lequel a fait le chemin inverse en intégrant Gresini aux côtés de son frère Alex. Honda a approché de nombreux pilotes tels que Maverick Viñales ou encore Miguel Oliveira, mais Marini a accepté l’offre. « Ce fut un choc après que Marc ait annoncé son départ, précise le demi-frère de Valentino Rossi dans une entrevue du HRC. Mon groupe, mon manager et moi-même avons essayé de trouver un moyen d’aborder ce nouveau projet, de nous progresser ensemble et d’essayer de mettre au point une meilleure moto, plus performante, pour pouvoir revenir et gagner des courses et des titres mondiaux. C’est notre but, notre objectif, alors je suis sûr qu’il y aura aussi des moments très satisfaisants. »
Et d’ajouter au sujet de cette décision : « Tout d’abord, c’est la meilleure équipe de l’histoire. Les chiffres et les statistiques parlent d’eux-mêmes. C’est un moment très particulier aujourd’hui, mais je pense que nous avons le pouvoir de revenir très, très bientôt. Je vais essayer d’apporter tout mon feed-back, toute mon énergie à ce projet et je suis sûr que nous trouverons la bonne direction et que nous aurons le pouvoir de rester au sommet pendant de nombreuses années. »
Marini est bien bien sûr conscient que le défi à relever est énorme, mais il garde le podium voire la victoire en ligne de mire. « Nous devons comprendre notre vitesse, notre potentiel après le premier test officiel, dit-il. Nous devons trouver notre équilibre et un moyen de battre nos adversaires directs qui sont mes coéquipiers avec le même constructeur et la même moto – c’est le premier objectif de mon côté, évidemment. Mais je veux aussi aller de l’avant et essayer de trouver un moyen de monter sur le podium avec cette moto ou de décrocher une victoire. Je sais que ce sera peut-être difficile, mais il faut regarder devant. »

En course il perd souvent du temps sur les fins de GP, handicapé par sa taille probablement. On s’en branle qu’il soit le plus fort au Ranch de son frère.
